Outside Bets

Outside bets are bets made on groups of numbers by placing chips on the areas of the roulette table that lie around the number grid but do not directly make up part of the grid itself. Outside bets are characterized by a higher winning probability than that of the inside bets, but against lower payouts, so that the house edge remains the same. Bets are placed in the designated areas, where the payout is often printed on the felt as well.

Outside bets include the following bets:

  • 1-18 (Manque) – This is a bet made on 18 numbers, betting that the winning number will be any number from 1 up to and including 18. The payout for this bet is 1 to 1.
  • 19-36 (Passe) – This is a bet made on 18 numbers, betting that the winning number will be any number from 19 up to and including 36. The payout for this bet is 1 to 1.
  • Red or Black (Rouge/Noir) – A bet that the winning number will be red or black. This bet pays out 1 tot 1.
  • Odd or Even (Pair/Impair) – A bet that the winning number will be odd or even. This bet pays out 1 to 1.
  • Dozen (Douzaine) – A bet made on twelve numbers, betting that the winning number will be among the 1st (numbers 1-12), the 2nd (numbers 13-24), or the 3rd (numbers 25-36) set of four rows on the betting grid. The payout for this bet is 2 to 1.
  • Column (Colonne) – A bet made on twelve numbers, betting that the winning number will be in the 1st (1,4,7,10,13,16,19,22,25,28,31,34), the 2nd (2,5,8,11,14,17,20,23,26,29,32,35), or the 3rd (3,6,9,12,15,18,21,24,27,30,33,36) column from the top to the bottom of the number grid of table. Bets are placed in the box below the column in question and pay out 2 to 1.

The bets that pay out 1 tot 1 (manque/passe, odd/even, red/black) are referred to as even money bets. Keep in mind, though, that your odds for these bets are not 50%. The presence of the 0 (and in American roulette also the 00) on the wheel makes those odds lower than 50% because 0 and 00 do not count as odd or even, red or black, and do not make up part of the 1-18/19-36 division.
