Call Bets

In land-based roulette there are a number of bets that are not defined by the layout of the table but by the layout of the wheel. These bets are called "special bets", or as referred to as "Call Bets" because ordinarily they have to be "called" or announced to the dealer. When you make a call bet you make a bet on the numbers that make up a particular sector of the European roulette wheel. The chips are placed in a set order on the number section of the table. These bets are also sometimes called French bets, because in casinos many of these bets are still designated by their French names. In online roulette these bets are often referred to as special bets, and can be found by clicking the special bets button.

When playing online roulette you can make all the call bets you want. In live roulette games a call bet is only valid when the dealer accepts the bet by repeating it. However, it should be noted that since laying out call bets is time consuming for the dealer, the dealer is permitted to refuse your call bet. Situations where a dealer may choose to do so could be when it’s really busy at the table, or when you have waited until the last moment to decide on placing a call bet, just as the game is about to resume. Good etiquette in such situations is to accept the dealer’s decision. When someone gets argumentative, they are also making other players wait and putting a strain on the atmosphere at the table. Call bets should be looked upon as a courtesy that may or may not be granted.
